If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:

Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.

If there is anything in particular that you're after, do ping me
as there is a lot of stuff here that isn't on the list; the list
just represents a snapshot of the previous month's haul with none
of the stuff having appeared on a previous list. I like to keep
things fresh here.

Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.

This list goes out to many people, normally on the first Monday
of the month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something
you want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.

Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.

Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.

I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.

If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weight it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.

Lastly, and I don't like to mention this, but if you tell me that
money is on the way for something you want, and you never make good
on it, we won't be doing business in the future. It's unfair, actually
downright discourteous, to others who want the same thing, and I tell
them it's sold. Pull this on me, and you're exorcised from the list.
Sorry, but I don't tolerate this behavior well at all.

Don't forget the cool new tools that I'm making - a jazzy layout
knife being used by professionals (made the cover of Feb.1998 FWW!),
a detachable block plane handle designed to fit your standard pitch
block planes, a killer Robinson's Improved Patent sliding bevel, a
tilting jaw for your Emmert's vise, and the finest bench plane in
production today, the Bed Rock #601. You can see it all at:

Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a zipper-
head, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle
dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is
green.

Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...

FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** ***** ** *** *****

FT1 A #3-size vertical post smoothing plane, right from the
original source and never in the hands of a tool artist
to mess with it; the design Leonard Bailey made, right
before his eureka moment that led him to the standard
design that spawned millions of planes that were, and
are still used, by millions worldwide; still obsessed
with rocking the frog and iron to change the set, Bailey
messed with this idea for over a decade trying to perfect
the iron plane; each design got him closer to the final
product, even the casual observer can see how this one
resembles his last design; made for a few years in Boston,
this plane uses a large brass nut, on a vertical screw
(hence the name, 'vertical post') to rock the frog up
and down, it still required too much machining to make
it practical; offered in all sizes, #1-#8 (no #2 has
been found, and I had a #10 in the Inner Sanctum), this
design became the standard for the sizes and is still
used today; a plane with no damage other than the tip
of the tote having been sheared off long ago, the plane
has a later Stanley iron in it, but still has the
original cap iron (which only is found on this design);
Bailey supplied his vertical posts with Moulson Bros.
irons, so finding a proper one won't be a difficult chore;
its original owner neatly stamped his name on one side
of the casting and in the tote; never cleaned, it's
nearly as fresh as the day it was made:

is ok on this fine worker that has its cutter pitched at
zero degrees; plating 50%; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t116.jpg $125.00   ST75 Pair of boxwood handle Razor Edge spoke shaves, the #84 and
#85; each with different lengths cutters, the former is in
fine shape, the carrier on the latter has the usual snapped
off ear, it's guaranteed to be a fine worker as is; designed
for fine shaving, thus their name; bottom two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t116.jpg $90.00
ST76 #104 Liberty Bell smoothing plane; a very clean, much nicer
that usual, example of this steel body plane that has the
unique adjustment; great grain pattern to the tote, small
chip at the tip, patent date visible on the cheek; all
original save for the small nut and screw to engage the
lever, a later one was made by an owner, it's easy to re-
place that from one of the transitional examples as they
are all the same; these planes got real ugly real quick,
this one escaped that fate; top:

ST77 #1 smoothing plane; rescued from a barn, along with several
other bench planes, the lever cap was off the plane and a
search found it in another plastic tub; all original, "S"
casting dates it to ca.1895, the tip of the tote was sheared
long ago, the japanning on the main casting is sparse; a 100%
honest example and not a cobbled together one offered by so
many other sellers; bottom:

 WOOD PLANES
**** ******

WP1 Adjustable door plane by M.Crannell/Albany; cuts a reverse
ogee on the stiles and rails as it's run within their
grooves, the plane has screws (surrounded by diamond shape
plating) to set it to the width of the groove; little used
and in fine shape, this plane was a popular design by the
Albany area makers, but is nowhere near common; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t2.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t2a.jpg $175.00
WP2 Adjustable sash plane by Greenfield Tool Co.; similar to
the previous plane, the screws are surrounded with brass
disks, it cuts the common square ovolo profile and the
rabbet simultaneously; in extra clean shape, barely used;
bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t2.jpg http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t2b.jpg $135.00
WP3 5/8" Roman ogee by I.Green; a late 1700's example with
flat chamfers, as found, no owner marks, dirty, small ding
on stop at heel, there are ancient shavings still in the
throat from when last used decades ago:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t3.jpg $90.00
WP4 3/4" match planes by Marples; centers the groove on 3/4"
thick stock, they are perfect for today's lumber; in fine
shape, showing normal wear, all they need is a honing;
top two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t34.jpg $85.00
WP5 Yellow birch reeding plane by Isaac Field/Providence; from
Field's earlier period, it's difficult to find his work in
this wood, his design followed Fuller's, I've had an even
earlier one that was the spitting image of a middle period
Fuller, which offers a clue that Field was in close contact
with Fuller; never cleaned, good surface, it cuts two 1/2"
diameter beads; a bit of wear on one bead's quirk, an owner
applied a strip of leather long ago; no owner mark, three
small holes in the heel, the plane is odd in that the step
on on the left side of the body; a nice example; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t50.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t50a.jpg $175.00
WP6 Chunky 10" beech quirk ogee and astragal with a real unique
style; broad flat chamfers, the step has a double mold; made
ca.1800, with original surfaces, it's a very well made plane
with loads of mass; cuts 3/4" deep by 1 1/8" wide, if early
and unique planes are your thing, you'll love this one;

WP7 Unique yellow birch cornice plane by L.Little/Bofton; as
nice as an early plane can be from Boston, this one has
never been abused and shows little signs of use; Little
had a style like I.Sleeper, whose planes are beech, 99.99%
of Little's planes are beech, this is a spectacular ex-
ception to that; with a single early owner mark, the
plane cuts the 3 1/2" wide ogee and reverse ogee separated
by a square, the common profile used on a cornice; no
hang holes, nail holes, or black holes, with some minor
stains, the original tote is beech (probably made in
batches waiting for a plane to put it on), it's definitely
original; an important example for those into 18th century
planes; top:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t55a.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t55b.jpg $785.00
WP8 Earlier cornice plane with crazy profile and low pitch iron;
cuts a 2 5/8" by 1 1/8" profile that's too difficult for
Freud to comprehend; made ca.1825, no maker/owner mark,
hole for helper handle, a fence as added on the right side,
holes are all the remain; crude handle matches the patina
and character of the rest of the plane, I believe it to be
original; stable checking in heel looks far worse than it
really is, a nice example that saw very little use; top:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t56b.jpg $355.00
WP9 26" jointer by L.&I.J.White; barely used, 2 1/2" wide
cutter, no damage, minor rust on iron will easily clean,
in much nicer than usual condition, good mass, a later
finish was applied to it; a fine worker; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t71.jpg $135.00
WP10 Three hollow planes, one 18th century Sleeper style with
a maker's mark I can't make out; sound workers, the widths
across the irons are 3/8", 1/2", and the early one a hair
narrower than 3/8"; bottom three:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t74.jpg $85.00
WP11 Extra clean owner made moving fillister with solid boxwood
sole; skewed iron, no nicker, it's made for rabbeting along
the grain; adjustable stop, no owner/maker marks, whomever
made this should have been doing it for a living; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t80.jpg $155.00
WP12 1/4" square ovolo by I.Sorby; as found, finish removed some
time ago, a sound plane plane that's useful for cabinet-
work; top right:

Canterbury; narrowest of the even numbers, always together
and with owner marks, all they need is a honing; top left:

were used once and forgotten; bottom right:

WP17 Cove and astragal; cuts 1/2" deep, it's manufactured but
the maker's mark has been obliterated (some owners did
that to their planes); owner marks in heel, a sound worker
of a profile that has nearly unlimited uses:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t85.jpg $90.00
WP18 18th century astragal and cove (together commonly called a
bolection); no maker's mark, ca.1775 English made, cuts a
3/4" deep by 1 1/8" wide profile that is popular on
furniture and architecture; dark patina, no owner marks,
a solid example:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t86.jpg $90.00
WP19 6" coachmaker's compass plane; a well made thing, it has an
adjusting screw at the heel to flex the steel plated sole
down so that the plane can work convex curvatures; with an
Aaron Hildick iron, minor stain, sound shape, an odd plane
for sure; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t87.jpg http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t87a.jpg $85.00
WP20 Adjustable chamfer plane by C.Nurse; the popular UK design
with a sliding box to set the width of cut via the screw
on the side of the 6 1/2" body; as found, never cleaned or
altered, it's stamped with a Dover tool merchant's name on
the heel; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t87.jpg $70.00
WP21 Late 18th century Hayes/Liverpool astragal with steeper
pitch for working hardwoods; as found, free of modification,
no owner mark, cuts a 1/2" wide profile that can fine many
applications; bottom:

WP22 Bulky owner made toted smoothing plane with brass plated
sole; good mass, laminated construction, finished with a
black color, sole is 8 1/8" long, 2 1/8" wide double iron,
it'll make a rugged smoother for general use; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t88.jpg $95.00
WP23 Goldenberg 8 1/4" smoother with original label on the wedge;
an interesting French plane, the uncut iron can be used with
or without the cap iron, it's secured to the iron via the
force applied from the wedge; only in need of a honing, it's
a quality plane; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t88.jpg $70.00
WP24 Continental moving fillister; original label reads RAKOVNIC,
which may translate to "kinda unattractive, but functional
even in the kitchen", this as found example has an adjustable
fence and a stop that runs the length of the body; skewed
iron, a beefy nicker iron, some superficial rust will easily
clean; probably equally at home skinning a cabbage as it is
peeling wood; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t89.jpg $115.00
WP25 3/16" diameter fully boxed bead by Cockbain/Carlisle; as
found, free of damage, never cleaned or abused, owner mark,
it's a good worker for times a 1/8" or 1/4" bead are needed
as the eye can't see a 1/16" difference; bottom left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t89.jpg $65.00
WP26 5 1/2" drip edge plane with brass skate; a well made thing,
the right side is molded (similar to a handrail) for better
grip, it's used to cut a small groove under the bottom of
a window sill so that the water rolls off; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t90.jpg $60.00
WP27 Pair of Japanese planes; knowing nothing about these things
other than the fact that I can categorically state that the
irons are not made from spent North Korean missile metal,
one is 6 3/4" long with a flat sole, the other 7 3/4" long
with a curved sole, both saw little use and are of a good
size for smaller work, like planing bonsai wood, or some-
thing like that; a little inside info here - I can't stand
these things, but I wouldn't mind having a Nissan Skyline
GT-R; bottom right two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t90.jpg $55.00
WP28 Fine yellow birch molding plane I..Martin, thought to be a
Vermont maker who obviously wasn't well tuned to accepted
styles made by those south of him; with unique charm, the
blocky stock is 9 3/8" long, the wedge is nearly the same
length; narrow flat chamfers don't offer a grip as comfort-
able as what wider ones afford, the step is nicely molded;
stamped three times with his mark, it cuts a 1 3/8" wide
wavy profile that resembles a washboard; in fine shape,
never cleaned or modified, and quite uncommon; top:

WP29 Gabriel square, reverse ogee, and cove; a lovely profile
on this late 1700's plane that's free of damage and owner
marks, it was refinished long ago; cuts a 3/4" deep by 1"
wide profile, some bang marks on heel, this is a very
nice plane of an uncommon complex profile:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t97.jpg $185.00
WP30 Smaller grooving plane with adjustable fence; made by
Emir, it has one (of the three) original irons of 1/8",
it saw little use; perfect for smaller work; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t98.jpg $65.00
WP31 Ohio Tool Co. toted screw arm plough; with the shaped tote
for more comfortable grip, made of beech, cleaned, it's a
sound worker and shows the common thread chipping, the
nuts and washers still hold firmly; stable check to nuts,
this is guaranteed to perform your grooving needs well;
top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t99.jpg $110.00
WP32 18th century larger square ovolo; a jack length plane with
offset crazy tote, round top IOHN GREEN iron, the plane
was used a few times and then forgotten; free of modi-
fication, 100% original, never cleaned, made of beech,
it cuts a 1 1/2" ovolo for architectural work; a nice
and solid plane; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t105.jpg http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t105a.jpg $145.00
WP33 4 5/8" wide (cutter size) yellow birch cornice plane; a
beast that forms one half of the common ogee and reverse
ogee profile, this one was for large buildings of great
importance, like a meetinghouse; as found, a helper
handle was dovetailed into the stock, that's long gone
now, an auxiliary fence was tacked onto the bottom of
the original fence, the tip of the original beech tote
was wounded in action; loads of mass and a lotta plane
for the buck; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t106.jpg http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t106a.jpg $265.00
WP34 Clean Greenslade fully boxed reeding plane; cuts three 1/4"
adjacent beads over the 3/4" width, remarkably it has
never had a fence attached, like nearly all have, it saw
limited use; entire working sole is boxwood; owner mark,
a much nicer than usual example; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t108.jpg $90.00
WP35 S.Rowell 1/2" bolection; cuts a 1/2" deep profile that has
loads of uses, smaller sizes of this profile are uncommon,
this example was carefully used, has a minor patch of
roughness in the boxing, no owner marks, and is perfect for
cabinetwork:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/oct/t115.jpg $110.00
WP36 1/2" skewed rabbet; manufactured, but only with owner's
mark, as found, a bit of staining on the heel, free of
modification, an uncommon width for finer worker; top:

WP37 Late 18th century 1/4" thumbnail (quarter round); with nice
grain pattern, narrow chamfers, unique wedge, free of
modification, well made, it's perfect for putting the fine
detail on drawer fronts; owner mark, it's of central New
England origin with the shorter length of 9"; these planes
are not common as most got used up through years of hard
work, image suggests is not a quarter round, that's the
angle of the image and a bit or wear; bottom:

allows water to go downhill as a drip; 5 3/4" long, in fine

slotted and has serrations on the edge; it's been suggested
as a can opener, and it may be that, I've tried it on a

the blade to make your prized mahogany greasy; as found,
the idea was made to apply on the blade of your choice,

prevent that); trigger works, the filler cap is missing
in action, maybe its owner deliberately chucked it so

making the mistake of mixing oil and wood; stamped with
