If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:

http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0.htm

Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.

If there is anything in particular that you're after, do ping me
as there is a lot of stuff here that isn't on the list; the list
just represents a snapshot of the previous month's haul with none
of the stuff having appeared on a previous list. I like to keep
things fresh here.

Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.

This list goes out to many people, normally on the first Monday
of the month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something
you want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.

Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.

Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.

I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.

If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weight it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.

Lastly, and I don't like to mention this, but if you tell me that
money is on the way for something you want, and you never make good
on it, we won't be doing business in the future. It's unfair, actually
downright discourteous, to others who want the same thing, and I tell
them it's sold. Pull this on me, and you're exorcised from the list.
Sorry, but I don't tolerate this behavior well at all.

Don't forget the cool new tools that I'm making - a jazzy layout
knife being used by professionals (made the cover of Feb.1998 FWW!),
a detachable block plane handle designed to fit your standard pitch
block planes, a killer Robinson's Improved Patent sliding bevel, a
tilting jaw for your Emmert's vise, and the finest bench plane in
production today, the Bed Rock #601. You can see it all at:

Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a zipper-
head, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle
dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is
green.

Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...

FEATURED ROBOT OF THE MONTH
******** ****** ** *** *****

FT1 Running out of firewood here as winter refuses to let
the northeast free of its icy grip, I caught the boy (in
the nick of time) tossing wooden planes into Al, our wood
boiler; good thing, too, as he was about to sentence a
significant plane to an ashy grave, one found in the
Harrod hoard, a Frances Nicholson of Wrentham, MA;
generally accepted as the first successful planemaker in
America, Nicholson worked during the second quarter of
the 18th century, throwing off his mortal tool in 1753;
from his earlier period, probably made ca.1740, it has
his name and location deeply stamped into the wood;
never messed with, owner marks, great patina, normal
wear from use, this one is fresh to the market and isn't
one that has been tossed around between dealers and
collectors; proving that even a blind squirrel gets
a nut, Walter Harrod refused to believe that a wooden
plane, or any antique tool for that matter, could be
worth so much money, he steadfastly refused to sell
anything that was in his shop; my 30 years of patience
finally paid off after his heir decided he'd rather have
the $$$$ rather than a piece of wood with a chunk of
iron stuck in it:

parts, including the fence, three cutters, and throat
closing shoe; in clean shape, hone the cutters and start
using it; top:

ST78 Type 1 #110 block plane with decorative shoe-buckle lever
cap; inspired by similar designs of the era, especially
those of Birdsill Holly, this is a good example of design
taking precedence over function, the elaborate lever cap
proved far too fragile, most suffered cracks; fortunately
this one is fine, but it is missing the original turned
knob as most are; as found, and a respectable example,
the sides of the mouth have been lightly filed, this was
done more often than one might think by numbnuts who
thought the sawdust could escapes on the sides when the
iron was finely set; complete with 1.3333333333 centuries
of dirt; left:

 WOOD PLANES
**** ******

WP1 Miniature pair of curved side rabbets; just 2 3/4" long,
left and right, both with the same owner's name, these
specialized planes were probably used by a coachmaker
or stairbuilder; a very uncommon form, all original,
including the wedge that has no finial, it never was
finished with one;
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t6.jpg $155.00
WP2 Rosewood smoothing plane with applied cast base and
parallel iron, it's a proto-infill plane made by Charles
& Co.; 7" coffin shape, its wedge has a finial like a
common wooden plane; extra fine mouth, loads of mass,
owner marks, including a couple generational one of which
is quite early; only in need of a honing, the heel of the
casting has a semicircular crack, as these planes nearly
always have, it won't grow any larger; a striking plane,
the image doesn't capture the rich rosewood body well;
left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t14.jpg $290.00
WP3 Solid boxwood chamfer plane with adjustable box to set
the width of cut, a brass nut locks it in place; a very
well made example, much nicer than what's normally found,
Buck iron, 6 1/2" long, only in need of a honing to be
used, chamfer planes and shaves were high art in England,
it's almost as if there was a secret competition to see
who could make the nicest or most unusual example;
right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t14.jpg $120.00
WP4 Barely used steel plated fence 1" match planes by Howland
&Co.; perfect for thicker stock, they can work 3/4" to 1";

working set for making curved moldings, like a cornice on
a tall chest, handrails, etc., they have always been to-
gether and are in sound worker shape; various widths, one
is a curved V-shape sole, another with a hollow with a
straight sole; bottom pile:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t18.jpg $355.00
WP10 Worker toothing plane with double head phoenix trademark

sole that will quickly clean; a handy plane for all sorts
of use, the 2" wide iron also has the phoenix and Malloch
name embossed in it; top right:

WP12 3/8" match planes by D.Malloch/Perth; used a couple times
and then forgotten, they are perfect for cutting the tongue
and groove joint in thinner stock; about as clean as they
come, with owner mark; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t31.jpg $85.00
WP13 Three beading planes by D.Malloch/Perth with phoenix logo;
little used, smaller diameters of 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4",
all perfect sizes for cabinetwork; owner mark, dry surface,
some boxing is loose and needs to be glued back in place,
an easy job; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t31.jpg $145.00
WP14 I.Sleeper 7/8" ogee; a never messed with ca.1780 plane
made by one of America's most colorful early makers from
Newburyport, MA, Sleeper's influence on other planemakers
is unmatched by any other maker, his distinctive elliptical
wedge is his most distinguishing feature; never messed with,
still showing its original dark finish, no owner marks, a
solid working example of a limitless profile; top:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t47a.jpg $115.00
WP15 A.Cumings/Boston 3/8" double bead; cuts a bead on either
side of the stock, the plane can be flipped end for end
to work the bead from either direction when tear-out occurs
(which is often the case when cutting a bead), the plane
can also work both edge of the board planing the grain in
the same direction; as found, never messed with, shows
normal signs of use, owner mark; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t47.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t47b.jpg $110.00
WP16 Marples adjustable grooving plane, unused in the original
box; the wooden version of the popular Record 043 plough,
designed for grooving smaller work, the plane has the same
width cutters as the metallic plane, 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4";
hone the irons and start grooving to this fine worker;
left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t48.jpg $120.00
WP17 Razee smoothing plane on steroids, it dwarfs the #5 1/2
below it; by Greenfield Tool Co., it's a wooden version
of a #4 1/2; measuring 9 1/2" long and fit with a 2 3/4"
wide double iron, the plane shows normal signs of use,
there's still plenty left in it; for general smoothing,
a metal strike button at toe for backing the wedge and
iron; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t53.jpg $155.00
WP18 9" rosewood miter plane; free of damage, iron bedded bevel
up, owner mark, some roughness about the mouth, probably
made by a shipwright as many similar exotic planes were;
nicer than usual condition; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t54.jpg $115.00
WP19 T.Tileston/Front St./Boston 3/4" (depth of cut) quirk ogee
with an upturn adjacent to the fence; a rather odd treat-
ment, the upturn is formed in wider piece of boxing, the
quirk has its normal boxing; as found, free of modification,
never cleaned, with owner mark, boxing is loose; a good
size for today's stock thickness; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t62.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t62a.jpg $90.00
WP20 Barely used, as clean as they come, moving fillister with
the less common Chapin Union Factory stamping above the
later Chapin-Stephens stamp; boxed shoulder, nicker iron
for scoring the grain, adjustable stop for regulating the
depth of cut, adjustable fence for setting width of cut,
this is an ideal plane for cutting rabbets in any grain
direction; all it needs is a honing; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t63.jpg $155.00
WP21 8" compass plane with double iron; in barely used shape,
it has a fixed shallow radius from toe to heel, it's the
thing for working longer hollowed stuff; manufactured,
though with no maker's mark, all it needs is a honing; a
fine example; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t78.jpg $65.00
WP22 Extra clean, perhaps unused, M.Crannell/Albany rounding
plane; a special purpose 7 1/2" long plane, it cuts a
9/16" diameter semi-circle; definitely not a nosing
plane, it may have been used to make fishing rods, with
other planes used to diminish the diameters over the
rod's length; small stain, a fine wooden plane; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t80.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t80a.jpg $110.00
WP23 Odd special purpose molder by Gardber&Murdock of Boston;
no other maker anywhere made the variety of wooden planes
that this pre-1850 firm did, they furnished the growing
city of Boston as demand for finer housing spread west
from the common; at 7 1/2" long, it cuts two opposing
quarter rounds (rightmost doesn't appear rounded, but it
 is) separated by a 5/16"fillet perhaps used as an edge
detail for shelving, it's in fine shape, little used,
never messed with, and no owner mark; right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t80.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t80b.jpg $185.00
WP24 Kennedy&Co./Hartford 7/8" (depth of cut) quirked ovolo and
astragal; good proportions, plane saw barely any use, there
is a small chip on the fence behind the iron; no owner
marks, a nice example:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t86.jpg $145.00
WP25 24" jointer with 2 1/2" wide double iron and lignum strike
button at the toe; closed tote, sole looks to have been
trued some time ago, it's a clean plane for general work;
top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t94.jpg $120.00
WP26 Wooden router designed to take plough plane irons; often
called an old woman's tooth router, this is a practical,
and considerably less money, alternative to the #71; 6"
stock is shaped for a comfortable grip, owner mark, small
chip of wedge finial, 100% usable; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t97.jpg $50.00
WP27 Half set of even number skewed hollows and rounds; in much
nice than usual condition, no reworks, all but two are by
Hields/Nottingham and have always been together, two proper
replacements by Moseley, #6R and #14H, match the set well;
owner marks, the #2R's wedge finial is sheared; a solid
working set:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t99.jpg $685.00
WP28 The first of several wooden planes that were in the
Harvard, MA cabinetshop of Walter Harrod; the shop was
in business for some 100 years, the 190 wooden planes
sat dust covered (and that's an understatement) on two
shelves that ran 1/2 around the small shop; this ca.
1790 yellow birch dado is one of my favorites in the
pile, it has such graceful lines and a unique throat
detail for the nicker iron; works a 3/16" dado, a most
uncommon width, it's all original and saw very little
use, there is a splinter behind the cutter, that happened
long ago; toe is stamped A:C, the heel "I.Sno", the last
letter weak, I'm guessing it's a "W"; 9 1/2" long, its
slender body makes it appear longer than that; delicate
finials, it's a wonder they never snapped off, it's
obvious the plane saw little use and probably explains
why they survived; bottom left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t109.jpg $145.00
WP29 Yellow birch rounding plane; 12" long, with characteristic
offset tote that is uncomfortable to grip (early plane-
makers didn't figure out how to make them comfortable until
the late 1700's), it has its original iron with round heel;
tote is secured to the stock with a pin, there is a small
chip on back horn; the heel of the wedge is faceted, the
plane probably dates ca.1770; possibly used to round the
tops of handrails, there are no owner marks; small check
at heel of tote's mortice, the plane hasn't been used in
over 200 years; a relic with a surface that only time can
produce; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110a.jpg $165.00
WP30 Pair of fluting planes; made from cherry, with the lovely
patina that only time imparts to this wood, the 9 3/4"
long planes have flat chamfers and detailed work at the
throat for the ejections of shavings; barely used, no
maker or owner marks, they cut 3/8" and 1/2" semi-circular
depressions characteristic of fluted work; a fine pair of
workers; bottom left two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110b.jpg $185.00
WP31 Follings 1" square ovolo; an amazing survivor, use just a
couple of times, no owner marks, beech, broad flat chamfers,
slender wedge, 10" long, it dates from the late 18th
century; a very uncommon maker, a small group of these
was found in Connecticut, he's yet to be pinned down where
he worked; bottom right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t110c.jpg $290.00
WP32 1 1/2" rabbet by J.Kellogg/Amherst; not skewed, used once,
put away, owner initials; as nice as they come; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t111.jpg $85.00
WP33 Same as previous, but 1" wide; not marked with Kellogg name
 (has same owner mark), in same condition as previous, wedge
is an odd profile for Kellogg, it appears original, perhaps
Kellogg didn't make this plane; a fine worker; bottom left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t111.jpg $85.00
WP34 5/8" rabbet with Union Factory and M.&A.Copeland mark; not
skewed, shows normal signs of use, plenty more left in it;
top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t111.jpg $70.00
WP35 1/2" skew rabbet by Appleton/Boston; skewed iron, barely
used, there's a warp where the toe and heel don't align
as it's dry, a bit of water and a press will get it back
to working order; bottom right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t111.jpg $45.00
WP36 1/2" dado by Appleton/Boston; barely used, with owner mark,
dado planes are one of the easiest wood planes to use, the
skills learned from these are transferable to other wooden
planes; a solid worker; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t112.jpg $85.00
WP37 3/8" dado by Gouch/Worcester (MA); another barely used
worker with uncommon style depth stop locking screw; owner
mark; bottom left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t112.jpg $85.00
WP38 1/4" dado by P.A.Gladwin; limited use, with plenty left in
it, 1/4" wooden dado planes are not common, this one is a
bit dirty; right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t112.jpg $90.00
WP39 Pair of L.Pollard toted planes, one a fixed width panel
raiser and the other an odd double nicker wide dado-like
plane; a most uncommon maker, from Harvard, MA, it's
fitting that Walter Harrod would have a plane or two by
Luke Pollard as that's where both lived (and both are
buried); two different styles and stamps, there may have
been two generations making planes; both with open totes
that have extra long bases morticed into the stock, the
wedges have the same faceted edges that are chamfered;
the panel raiser has its original applied fence and cuts
the classic profile of 1 1/2" width; the dado plane is
made of yellow birch and has flat chamfers, unfortunately
the iron and nickers are MIA, it's otherwise in fine
shape; living some 25 miles from where these were made,
these are the second and third examples I've had by this
elusive maker; 15" long, no owner marks, and free of
alteration save for the face of the panel raiser's wedge
partially trued for a better fit long ago, it's probable
that this is the first time the planes left the town in
which they were made 200+ years ago:

WP40 Another pair of planes, these with unique oversize wedges
and made of yellow birch, it's likely these were made in,
or close to, Harvard, MA; both by the same hand, only one
is stamped by its maker, J.Allen, and fortunately on the
nicest one, a non-sprung reverse ogee and astragal that
cuts a 1" deep profile; both with wedge finials that border
on the obscene, the planes are late 18th to early 19th
century, 10" long and with pronounced rounded chamfers;
when viewed in person, it's obvious Allen was working in
a vacuum as this style is unlike any other; another local
planemaker, Hosea Edson, a Shaker from the Harvard
community (where he's buried), also had a unique style,
perhaps that community influenced planemakers of that
locale and era; both in fine shape, never messed with,
the other plane is for cutting reeding, working four at
a time, there's a shallow splinter off one edge; a great
pair of planes, the later with owner initials, the former
 Mr.Harrod lent to me to use on a baseboard for the ca.1810
Federal era house I dismantled and then restored; top two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t115.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/may/t115a.jpg $590.00
WP41 EZ,BAXTER yellow birch round; not among the Harrod hoard,
this roughly No.14 size plane dates to the late 1700's;
made of yellow birch, with a classic relieved wedge, it
has a strong southeastern MA appearance, but most of the
1.5 dozen, or so, examples have been found in central MA
and NH; never altered or abused, dry surface, no owner
mark, very well made, this plane hasn't been used for
centuries; a fine example of early American planemaking
that found unique designs in New England; bottom:

MS11 14" tenon saw in as clean condition as a split nut ca.1880
Sheffield example can be; right out of a patternmaker's
chest, this thing was babied, it's free of damage and
owner marks; made by Sanderson Brothers, the ripsaw that
came with it is still with my piles of stuff in England,
that saw is also in the same condition, the buyer of this
one will have first dibs on it; a great example in never
need upgrade condition, UK saws never survive in this
condition; middle:

MS12 Decorative spiral drill with turned boxwood head fit with
a faceted white material turning; a tiny thing, a 8" long,
the metallic pump is knurled; concentric rings turned on
the domed head, below that is hexagonal work suggestive of
London pattern chisel handles; never messed with, still
functional, it likely belonged to a skilled watchmaker or
similar tradesman; bottom:

Rd. location; drill proper is 10", it has a metallic pad
with a nut-locked chuck in it, that is removable for

MS17 ca.1725 boxwood two-slide gauging rule; at 18" long, this
is a rare length for what's normally a 12" rule; no maker's
mark, it's in fine shape given its age, with some minor
staining, a slight warp (as boxwood is prone to suffer),
I found this in a box of ca.1950 chisels, which proves you
need to be thorough when scrounging for stuff; middle:

MS18 10 1/2" boxwood eyesight measure (I assume that's what this
is); with a fixed eyepiece with a lens, a sliding brass bit
 runs the length of the thing, there are words that come into
and out of focus when viewed, graduations probably map to
something meaningful to an optometrist; in overall fine shape,
noting two rim chips on the eyepiece, the arm has a bit of a
warp; a neat thing that would give street cred to modern day
optometrists; bottom:

MS22 Rosewood stuff cast skewed rabbet; similar to what Bayfield
(of Nottingham) made, the decorative casting contrasts
nicely with the rosewood to make for a visually pleasing
appearance; 1" wide, cleaned, showing expected bang marks

MS23 Preston, with additional Tyzack mark, 9" bronze stonemason's
square; with the Tyzack mark over the Preston, the former
must have bought this from Preston so they could retail
it, they left enough of the Preston mark to identify its
maker; with original steel 'rule' that's in usual pitted
shape, the bronze has been cleaned; a finely made tool
that seems a bit too nice for such a rough and dirty trade;

MS24 Marples 8" miter square with original full trade label;

MS25 Preston No.10 oversize smoothing plane; a #4 1/2 size plane
that has Preston's unique adjustment features, it's obvious
the firm was trying to take Stanley on, but lost miserably;
an overly complex design that's quite a bother to set up
properly, it's now better suited as a collector's, rather
that a user's, plane; in overall fine shape, with no damage,
all original parts save the small screw at the toe of the
tote; the tote split long ago and has a neat repair that's
almost invisible; top:

hinged wooden box; a eye grabbing quality, barely used

and 1 1/2"; box is in fine shape, with full labels inside

have to turn that from an old level; it's your choice

MS64 Victor No.14 combination plane; a crazy plane the Bailey
offered, it proved to be a very fragile thing that was
awkward to use; with all original parts, and most of the
original finish, this example is offered as a restorable
plane as there is a repair on the cross piece that carries
the adjustable fence, this is a very easy to find part;
a small chip (under the knob) and a bit of original
casting roughness on the bottom horn, even with these the
plane is still far nicer than what's normally found; not
everything Leonard Bailey touched turned to gold, this is
his black mark on his genius, one he probably regretted
making; top:

MS180 The gizmo that launched a machinist's tool empire, Leroy
Starretts' patented food chopper; issued 5/23/1865 while
in Newburyport, Starrett received two other household
patents (a butter churn and washing machine) during the
same year and needed a place to manufacture them; Athol,
MA proved to be suitable as he contracted with others to
form the Athol Machine Co.; of the first three patents,
it's the chopper, with its walking beam, that proved to be
the most successful, it was offered in five sizes, this
one being the middle size with a 10" diameter can; while
in Athol, Starrett patented the combination square (in
1879) and changed his focus to make those and countless
other machinist's tools; this example is as found, free
of damage, works well, shows normal finish wear, a good
bit of the original green paint remains on the wooden
base; a testament to Starrett's inventive mind and keen
business acumen:

dates of Jan.14, 1873 and Feb.10, 1874, it's a clean
example of George Moore's (Scotch Plains, NJ) "device
for aiding cutting goods on a bias"; things like paper,
material, leather, etc., it's designed to guide a cutting
tool, such as a knife, while holding the material below;
clearly stamped with the two patent dates, Moore's name
and location of New York (probably moved from NJ), it's
an isoceles right angle configuration with legs of two
feet, each side has brass plating as reinforcement where
they join; one leg is graduated in inches, above those
are other inch graduations though a 45 degrees; an odd
thing that can't be too common as I don't recall seeing
another; angly thing:
