If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:
https://supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0.htm
Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.
Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.
This list goes out to many people, normally on the first Monday
of the month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something
you want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.
Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.
Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.
I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.
If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weigh it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.
Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a zipper-
head, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle
dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is
green.
Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...
FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** **** ** *** *****
FT1 The Challenge smoothing plane as manufactured by Iver
Johnson of Fitchburg and Worcester, MA; the crazy idea of
Arthur Goldsborough, from Washington, DC, it was patented
in 1883 and 1884, the design looks good on paper, like
many other ideas from that area, but failed in real life;
with an adjusting screw that's threaded into a inverted
U-shape of the main casting, the U has a 'kerf' through
which the iron fits, this forms a very week area that's
prone to cracking as the adjusting screw is thrust back-
ward to apply pressure on the U; fortunately, this one
escaped the damage despite it being used quite a bit;
all original parts, no damage, normal finish loss, it's
one of the strangest looking planes ever made, it never
sold in great number and is a very uncommon plane that
was better left in Goldsborough's mind; out of the Inner
Sanctum:

ST45 #171 router; a rather strange plane that was better left
on the drawing board than it is in a toolchest, it's
designed for cutting hinge mortices on doors; as found,
single cutter, both rosewood handles have a fine crack,
one glued, the other will glue better; this plane likely
inspired the hideous line of fiberboard planes; top left:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t88.jpg $175.00
ST46 #12 scraper; a good as found worker with original Stanley
marked blade, it saw little use; exterior of the casting

to find, it has the blue finish used ca.1960, it also has
the longer body (which is normally found with black finish),
it's also the only vintage that has "BAILEY" embossed in
the main casting; probably used once or twice and put
away, Stanley must have run out of #2 length lateral levers
and had to use a #3 one on it, which makes the iron look
short, but it's full length; one for the the collector who
want the complete run of #2 production, this is only the
second I've seen in 40+ years of active tooling; top:

WP6 7/8" quirk ovolo and astragal by H.Brown; cleaned, with
some staining at the toe, several owner marks, a 3/4"
rubbing of the boxing behind the mouth, a tiny chip at
the heel's boxing suggests the astragal is worn, it isn't:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t17.jpg $85.00
WP7 W.Raymond 3/4" cove and astragal; a fine, never messed with,
and barely used example, the iron shows normal rust from
sitting; owner mark, a very versatile profile, it will be
easy to put this one back to work:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t18.jpg $160.00
WP8 3/16" fully boxed bead by George Burnham Jr. of Amherst,
MA; barely used, perfect size for 1/8" and 1/4" appli-
cations, still with original inking on the heel:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t19.jpg $75.00
WP9 I.Sleeper bollection; cuts 5/8" deep by 1" wide, it wasn't
made with a stop, it can keep working deeper into the wood
so that another profile can be worked adjacent to it; never
messed with, barely, used, no owner mark, very small stain
on right side, it's practically new old stock:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t20.jpg $265.00
WP10 Barely used Benton, Evans&Co./Rochester 7/8" by 2" quirk
ogee and bevel; a less common maker, owner mark, this is
nice, never messed with example:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t21.jpg $120.00
WP11 I.Holmes 5/8" square ovolo; a maker who hasn't been fully
documented, it's a flat chamfer beech plane with a late
18th century appearance; cleaned, the fence has been
shimmed a bit so it can work thicker stock; mark is read-
able, but somewhat weak; owner mark:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t22.jpg $110.00
WP12 A.Smith 3/4" astragal; another nice example with the same
owner mark as WP3; little used, with some stain spots on
the right cheek:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t23.jpg $135.00
WP13 R.Barnes 7/8" quirk ogee; an uncommon maker from Orange,
MA, a town upstream from Millers Falls and downstream
from Athol, both major manufacturing centers, all of
which used the Millers River to power their mills, this
river's source is a mile from where this list originates;
in fine, as found condition, owner initials in heel, good
proportions:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t24.jpg $135.00
WP14 R.M.Tilburn quirk ovolo and astragal; learning his trade
in Newburyport, he was influenced by John Sleeper, he
later moved to NJ and PA, this one is a mystery as it has
the later locations' wedge profile but the body has broad
flat chamfers typical of Sleeper's work, perhaps the blank
was formed prior to his move, he finished it in NJ; a very
nice example, with lignum boxing a la Sleeper, it's little
used, the heel is inked with the profile's name, though
he wrote the astragal as a bead; cuts 1" deep, owner marks,
one cover the "R" of the maker's mark;
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t25.jpg $170.00
WP15 H.Wetherell/Chatham quirk ogee and astragal; cuts 3/4"
deep, the maker sized it by width of 1 1/4"; with the
decorative marks adjacent to the maker name, both Wetherells
used this; round chamfers, cleaned, normal checks in the
boxing, nice proportions:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t26.jpg $160.00
WP16 Tho:Grant/New:York; an odd plane that's 10 3/8" long and
with very broad chamfers, trying to understand the Grant
planes does my head in; cuts an unsprung 1" ogee, it has
a very long wedge; some staining, mark is readable but
weak, this likely is from his earliest working period,
he is one of the few New York planemakers, many wooden
planes in that city were imported from England while Grant
was working, The Revolution put an end to that:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t27.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t27a.jpg $295.00
WP17 D.Copeland/Hartford 3/8" quirk ogee and astragal; uncommon
size with lots of twists and turns in a small area; little
used, crack in boxing, lightly cleaned, perfect for finer
detail when used with a larger profile, it also is good
for stairs where it's used under the tread:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t28.jpg $155.00
WP18 Aaron Smith/Rehoboth 7/8" cove and astragal; a very nice,
and barely used plane from his middle period, it features
a relieved wedge on a 9 1/2" long body that has flat
chamfers; barely used, no owner mark, a shallow splinter
off the fence at the toe, this happens too frequently
when the fence smashes into the end of the board being
worked:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t29.jpg $225.00
WP19 S.Noyes quirk ovolo and astragal with lignum boxing; a
barely used plane that cuts cuts 7/8" deep, it's a plane
that is entirely how John Sleeper made them, Noyes had to
know or know of Sleeper, I think AWP has it wrong with
its claim that S.Noyes worked west of Boston, in Sudbury;
regardless, it's a great example, no owner mark, with
some original inking on the heel; a very uncommon maker
mark:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t30.jpg $285.00
WP20 N.Taber 3/8" astragal; a very nice example that still has
remnants of the original finish, it's from Taber's middle
working period with flat chamfer and a slightly relieved
wedge; never messed with, owner initials, and by the father
of many notable sons who carried on the planemaking trade:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t31.jpg $155.00
WP21 Joseph Titcomb 3/8" thumbnail; born in Newbury, MA, it's
another plane that can easily be mistaken for a Sleeper,
such was Sleeper's influence, perhaps the most copied
style of any planemaker; lightly cleaned, hang hole near
the toe, the common way to store planes over the bench
was on a peg or nail; a great size for smaller chests and
boxes, with owner mark:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t32.jpg $235.00
WP22 I.Nicholson round; one of the nicest unmolested mid-18th
century planes I've seen, John Nicholson is the son of
Frances Nicholson; never cleaned, altered, it has early
owner initials cut with a chisel on the right cheek; only
stamped with his name, not his location, his residence was
in Wrentham, but town lines were being redrawn and he
suddenly found himself in Cumberland, RI, it's probable
that he didn't stamp the location as the plane was made
when the adjacent towns were in dispute over the towns'
borders, he eventually moved back to Wrentham; some very
minor staining on the toe, that doesn't extend beyond
what's show in the image:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t33.jpg $1185.00
WP23 Ion Ballou/Providence narrow hollow; an uncommon maker
whose planes are all over the place in quality, this one
is fairly standard for his work; free of alteration,
lightly cleaned, maker mark is weak, but it's all there,
most of his planes are not stamped with the Providence
location, it's odd that he chose to mark this 5/8" wide
plane with both stamps, there's just enough room for both;
lightly cleaned:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t34.jpg $1185.00
WP24 Clean D.R.Barton screw arm sash plane with fully boxed
square ovolo profile and boxed shoulder for the rabbet;
barely used, no owner mark, #48 model number stamped in
the heel, it has boxwood arms and nuts, the plane can be
made wider to cut deeper sash of the kind found on civic
buildings, it can also cut standard sash for house; a
fine example; top:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t35.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t35a.jpg $155.00
WP25 14" jack plane by Addison Heald & Son of Milford, NH; with
his unique wooden wedge that's pinned to the cheeks, a
wooden thumb screw secured the 1 3/4" double iron; showing
normal signs of wear from use, it has plenty left in it,
there's banging on the top of the stock, near the toe,
from backing the iron off, the sole shows wear marks, it
can be honed and used as is; top:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t36.jpg $110.00
WP26 N.Chapin Eagle Factory screw arm plough; a clean worker
that saw normal use, it has plenty more life left in it;
beech body, wedge, and fence that has steel plating to
reduce wear; boxwood arms, nuts, and washers, the rear
washer has a check and a chip off one of the 'lugs';
owner mark, a solid example made by Hermon Chapin's
brother; left:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t37.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t37a.jpg $140.00
WP27 Toted rosewood screw arm plough by A.Cummings of Boston;
another good worker in better than usual condition, the
arms, nuts, and washers are boxwood, one nut has a check
and some wane on it; owner initials, cleaned, the rose-
wood fence has a dovetailed strip of boxwood to reduce
wear; right:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t37.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t37b.jpg $295.00
WP28 A.Smith/Rehoboth yankee plough; made of beech, it retains
the earlier characteristics of New England planemaking
prior to 1800; a decent example, clear maker mark, some
light staining, one lobe of the depth stop's thumb screw
sheared long ago, the plane lacks the common flaws found
on these planes - badly split arms, chunks off the heel
about the rear arm mortice, and bashed wedge, fortunately
this one escaped that damage:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t38.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t38a.jpg $385.00
WP29 Yellow birch cornice plane by L.Little/Bofton, a most un-
common wood for this maker who preferred beech; cutting
the common ogee, reverse ogee of a 3 1/2" width, this
plane must have been one of Little's earliest efforts; in
fine overall condition, the heel has a couple small nail
holes when the smaller ogee was covered so it would cut
just the larger ogee; totes horn was docked a hair long
ago, it was reglued in its mortice; early owner mark,
good patina, a rare plane by another maker from Newbury,
a town that produced/influenced more planemakers than any
other; top:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t39.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t39a.jpg $685.00
WP30 Thomas Grant adjustable panel raiser; many Grants were
operating in New York City, at least one imported planes
from England, this is likely one as it has the character-
istics of those found in England; jack size, an adjustable
fence runs the 14" length of the body, a dovetailed stop
is set at a skew near the toe; skewed iron allows it to
work any grain direction; overall fine shape but with
some fixable warts - the tote needs to be glued back into
the mortice, the fence was reworked to be square with the
sole and should be beveled (a piece can be glued or tacked
on it, and the stop needs some shimming as it slips in its
socket (a shim will do the trick); weak Grant mark, made
pre-1800, and definitely one worth the effort to put it back
to work; bottom:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t39.jpg
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t39b.jpg $180.00
WP31 16" razee lignum jack plane by F.P.Eastman, a coastal New
England planemaker who offered bench planes made in the
manner shipwrights preferred; as found, dusty, the tote
is a different exotic wood, the horn is sheared, it can
be repaired or replaced; sole has a polished surface, a
chip is behind the iron; good mass, it has a 2" double
iron by Buck Bros.; definitely will make a fine worker
and still can be used as is; owner mark below the rare
maker's mark; top:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t40.jpg $160.00
WP32 Lignum dado plane; a very unusual wood for this kind of
plane; cuts 3/8" wide, overall fine shape, with colorful
body that has stable checks that are next to impossible
to avoid with lignum; nicker wedge is a replacement; a
rare example like made by a shipwright for his own use;
bottom:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t56.jpg $120.00
WP33 7 1/2" beech smoothing plane by Primus; with ECE button
at the toe, steel strike button at heel, it saw limited
use, some staining is on the left cheek; 2" double iron
that needs a small chip ground out; a worthy worker with-
out too much effort; right:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t65.jpg $50.00
WP34 W.Williams/Warranted quirk ovolo, cove, and astragal; cuts
1" deep, it has great proportions; cleaned, owner initials,
it's an uncommon profile:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t69.jpg $165.00
WP35 Extra nice and clean skewed set of 16 hollows and rounds
by Varvill&Son; each can be honed and used as is, they
have always been together and have the same owner mark;
for some reason, the #12 pair got separated from the set,
what remains has been patiently waiting for someone to
put them to real work:90
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t79.jpg $590.00
WP36 Moving fillister with fully boxed shoulder, wedge nicker,
and steel plated screwed stop; retailed by Dames of Chi-
chester, it's as found and has the notched fence for easy
removal of the iron when it needs tending; a plane that
can cut a rabbet in any grain direction; with owner mark;
top:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t81.jpg $140.00

of cut, it's the standard design used in England; as found,
in worker shape, owner mark; top left:
https://supertool.com/forsale/feb/t82.jpg $75.00
WP38 Eli Smith narrow hollow; an uncommon maker thought to be
from Litchfield, CT, he served in The Revolution; with a
unique relieved wedge, it's made of beech and is 9 1/2"
long, with flat chamfers; a later owner stamped the left
side with coins which look to be mid-1800's large cent
and Indian head penny, there is the common breakage at
mouth on the same side; mark is weak, but can be read, an
owner stamped his name adjacent to it; a very uncommon
maker; top right:

it; sole has been nicely patched with fine details, the
mouth is very fine, the plane can be used as is as it was
recently sharpened; shaped wedge, owner mark, this is a
very nice plane; top:

WP52 C.Nurse sash fillister with boxed shoulder, boxwood wedge
for nicker, skew iron, and wedge arms; designed to cut on
the right side of the work, rather than the left, it's a
a great design for cutting narrow and/or deep rabbets with
greater accuracy as the plane stays consistent throughout

moving fillister while cutting the same size rabbet;
barely used, free of damage, no owner mark, dry surface,
if it was used it was only a couple times; top:

MS119 80 blueprints of historical New England houses as drawn by
the Historic American Buildings Survey, a division of the
US Park Service, that were done during the 1930's; these
appear to be from that era, they are definitely not modern
reprints, they are within a hardboard cover with a separated
spine; a treasure trove of detail, there are sets for six
houses, with single sheets for others; in fine shape, some
with fraying on the edges, those are the exception rather
than the rule, the details are sufficient for building an
exact replica of each house; as part of a library, or as
framed prints, they illustrate what classic design in
pre-1800 America was, and how it shames nearly all styles
of architecture that came later; a great group, these can
be bought new, in a smaller format, finding period ones
is difficult, and certainly a bargain over what an architect
today would charge for blueprints that pale in comparison
with the details found on these; the plans are for 18th
century buildings; roughly 17 1/2" x 23 1/2":
