If you have questions about what the Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up on Blood&Gore:

http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0.htm

Sometimes, emails to/from me are vectored to some cyber black
hole, never reaching their destination. I answer all emails, so if
you haven't heard from me, your/my email is likely having high tea
in said black hole, never to be heard from, so please try again.

Please email me prior to sending money so that you can be sure
the item is still up for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the amount that it takes to go from me to you via the US
Post Office.

This list goes out to many people, normally on the first of the
month (unless otherwise noted above). So, if you see something you
want, it's the quickest finger on the trigger that wins the duel.

Some folks become upset that they miss out on a tool. I wish I had
lots of this stuff many times over so I can satisfy the demand, but
that is normally not the case. Some of it does have duplicates here,
and if so, I will state that in my reply to you.

Also, due to the nature of selling over the wires, tools are sold
on a first come, first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it. I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to keep others waiting who are willing to buy the
item immediately.

I reserve the right to correct typographical errors after the list
goes out. I rarely make them, but when I do they can be major ones.

If you're the kind of person who puts a straightedge to the sole of
a #40, to check it for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale to
weigh it against what it states in the Stanley catalogs, you'll need
to take your business elsewhere. I'll wish you luck finding perfection
in something that was never made, nor intended to be, perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it's best for both of us that our paths not cross.

Remember, you don't have to be a connoisseur (did I spell that
correctly) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a metalhead, a propeller-
head, a deadhead, a cokehead, or even a knuckle dragging oaf, just like
me, to shop here, as long as your dinero is green.

Thanks for shopping, and remember that no letters or words were
injured when writing this list...

FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** **** ** *** *****

FT1 Manufactured skew rabbet with cutter by D.Lovejoy&Son of
Lowell, MA; these planes shows up every now and then
around here, all are identical, with most having a cutter
from the Lowell maker known to have produced planer
cutters; definitely manufactured, they are very well made,
it's uncertain which manufacturer made them; out of the
Inner Sanctum, it's likely the best example to surface,
apart from some dust and tarnish on the cutter and casting,
it's like the day it was made, it would be difficult to
find a nicer example; 9 1/2" long, the delicate closed
tote is free of any damage and retains most of its original
finish; a unique looking plane that looks to date ca.1875:

production with broad flat chamfers:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t5.jpg $80.00
WP4 Odd Griffiths/Norwich cove, quirk ogee, and bead; sized for
1/2"+ thick stock, there are a lot of twists and turns for
such a compact profile; triple boxed, it's difficult to
photograph well:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t6.jpg $155.00
WP5 DeForest/Birmingam (Connecticut) rosewood screw arm plough;
generally thought to be America's best wooden plane maker,
he advertised a solid gold plow plane in his catalogue;
with solid rosewood body, fence and wedge, the arms, nuts
and washers are boxwood, but it looks like they were finished
to resemble rosewood/ebony, that finish is mostly worn off,
though one washer is ebony and matches the boxwood exactly;
a fine looking plane, with owner mark, the wedge has a nice
two color grain, there's some normal roughness to it:

WP11 Laminated scrub plane made by Steve Knight (as I recall),
a member of the oldtools listserv that evolved from the
usenet rec.woodworking (rec.norm, as I called it) cesspool
roughly 30 years ago, before all the modern tool experts
and dodgy tool dealers knew how to turn on a computer; made
at a time when anyone with an idea to make handtools, in-
cluding yours truly, had a go at it hoping to resurrect the
handtool way of life (handtool fundamentalism, if you will)
after eschewing the plug it in and turn it on abNORMal way
of processing/butchering wood that had a stranglehold on the
hobby/trade, this tool is one of many offered during that
time; while I find it quite unsightly, many raved at its
utility, it has managed to survive well after having seen
careful use; 10 3/4" long, with what looks to be ash and a
strip of an exotic as the sole for durability, it has a
very unconventional grip; it's almost like setting The
Waybac Machine to last century prior to the Y2K panic with
this one; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t46.jpg $125.00
WP12 J.Taber toted double iron sash plane; a very nice example
from ca.1800, relieved wedges and broad round chamfers, it

(of Milford, NH) for Lowell, MA retailer Frederick Taylor;
with rosewood wedge and closed tote, this a fine example
of Heald's work, his quality was recognized by many fine
retailers, including Wilkinson of Boston, a firm that sold
only the best tools; carefully used, with some very minor
chipping at the mouth, a shallow splinter along the toe's
edge, no owner mark, the 2" double iron is by Moulson
Brothers; nice grain pattern, a lignum strike button at the
toe; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t55.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t55a.jpg $285.00
WP14 Earlier cooper's croze with smith-made ram's horn wing nuts
to secure the body to its 19" long body/fence; dates to the
early 19th century, it's very well made and saw careful use,
a later owner added two friction fit pegs to allow cutting
a different diameter, the plane is used to cut the groove
at the top/bottom of the staves in which the head is fit;
a uncommon design and one that didn't get the daylights
beat out of it; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t55.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t55b.jpg $165.00

65 1/2 Bowery St., New York, NY; an uncommon size for the
popular tongue and groove joint, they have brass plating
on the fences for greater durability; little used, the
grooving plane has an applied shim (can easily be removed)
for some custom work; with owner mark; top left two:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t56a.jpg $140.00
WP18 Pair of snipe bills by Marley/New York (with his Elm St.
address); workers that saw little use, one has a chunk of
boxing missing well back from the mouth, it has no bearing
on its use, they'd otherwise be $200+ planes; American
snipe bills are uncommon; top two:

WP25 Rare matching set of four Sandusky Tool Co. "SPECIAL" planes
for weatherstripping; in nearly new condition, these planes
have steel plating that can be adjusted to the required

WP26 1/2" match planes; unmarked, but unmistakable a Sandusky
Tool Co. production; steel plated fences, barely used, they
were found with the previous group; a good worker set for
cutting tongue and groove joints; top left:

WP28 Kennedy, Barry & Way/N.York reverse ogee and bevel, it's
designed to cut the profile flat on the wood's surface a la
a cornice plane, it likely was used with another molding
plane to create a more complex profile; as found, never
cleaned, the cut is 1 5/8" wide; an uncommon pattern for
an American plane; bottom:

WP32 Chapin-Stephens adjustable sash plane; nicely cleaned,
little used, it cuts the common square ovolo profile, the
plane can work a wider range than the standard sash plane
making it useful when different widths are needed; screws

WP35 C.H.Dennison/Freeport, ME concave V (for lack of a better

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t64a.jpg $185.00
WP36 28" shooting plane with two opposing irons; made like the
Warren's Patent except it's wood, not iron, it may in face
be his design offered at a lower cost; as found, great
amount of mass, it cuts left or right with skewed cutters,
the turned handle is centered on the stock; little used,
some long inactive worm holes in no way compromise its
use, the heels of the irons, where they are exposed above
the wedges, show pitting, the business end, as well as
most of the length, is free of that; a good alternative to
the more expensive iron examples:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t66.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t66a.jpg $285.00
WP37 Miniature smoothing plane with a 1 7/8" wide cutter than
has a New York maker/retailer mark stamped in it, I can't
easily make out the surname, it's Jacob 'something'; 3 3/4"
long, in sound worker shape, it's great for working small
areas; top right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t67.jpg $95.00
WP38 J.R.Tolman/Hanover/Mass curved shiphawk plane with steel
plated sole, something I've never seen on such a plane;
made by a maker who supplied the shipbuilding trade, it's
believed these planes were used to cut in the waterline on
the ship's hull; as found, free of damage, dry finish, the
light areas managed to lose their finish, some oil will
take care of that; well made, owner mark, and certainly
rare as the standard issue planes are quite uncommon; these
planes can be used with hollows and rounds to cut in V
tracks in which rounds can reference and to make the right
angle cuts found on some complex profiles; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t70.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t70a.jpg $185.00

WP40 3/8" dado by Chapin's Union Factory; found with previous,

addition, is secured with two countersunk screws; in sound
condition, the tote is free of damage, two small screw
holes on the right cheek when a stop was needed for a
custom job; never cleaned, owner mark, a lot of mass, flat
chamfers at toe and heel, rounded along the length; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t72.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t72a.jpg $235.00
WP43 N.S.Hosmer (of Concord, MA) cornice plane; a very nice
late 18th century plane with broad flat chamfers, it cuts
a 2 3/4" wide quirk ogee, astragal, and cove of very
pleasing proportions; the Hosmer family were cabinetmakers
and housewrights around Concord, this plane was found with
two others that both have the Concord location stamped in
them, unfortunately they lack irons, they also have known
planemaker stamps on them; this one has two different
Hosmer stamps in the beech body, at first I though this
was made by one of the Littles, but the tote has two
through pegs to secure it to the stock, something the
Littles didn't do, I suspect this one was made by Hosmer;
as found, with centuries of grime, helper handle, it's a
fine example of an early plane from an area not known for
many professional planemakers; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t72.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t72b.jpg $685.00
WP44 18th century jointer with the characteristic decorative
offset tote that made it appearance on Dutch planes, then
English planes, then American planes; made of yellow birch,
the 24 1/2" slender stock survived quite well, many take
on a wedge shape from decades of use, this one escaped
that; as found, never cleaned or altered, especially for
a later iron, this one has its original 2" wide Newbould
single iron; ancient rosehead nail at the tote's toe to
secure it, the tote survived very well, many are often
cracked, checked, and/or chipped; some bashing of the stock
forward of the throat from a mallet used to back the iron
off; all in all, a fine example that could only be made
better with a known planemaker's mark, planes such as this
rarely come along in this condition; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t73.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t73b.jpg $285.00
WP45 3/16" cockbead by Kinear; fully boxed, little used, with

MS64 Cocobolo striking knife made by yours truly; long out of
stock, it was the first faithful copy of an old style knife,
many hopped on the bandwagon after this made its debut over
25 years ago; barely used, one found in an organ builder's
tool chest inspired it; bottom right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t44.jpg $110.00
MS65 Clark&Williams/1998 miniature wooden router; a nice tool
of a clever design that merges a plane body with a router
base; a rare tool by the makers during their early years,
it's 2 5/8" long with a 1/4" cutter; a small flake off
the body from careless storage, it'll work as good as new;
perfect for finer work, small hinges, carving backgrounds,
etc.; top left:

MS66 Pair of layout tools; a well made exotic wood awl that

MS70 Massive Barr Tool Co. drawknife with 9" edge; barely used,
this thing could double as handle bars on a 1928 Indian
Scout; fine quality, no longer offered at this length,
capable of peeling bark, paint, barnacles, and skin, if
you decide to throw it, and it boomerangs back at you,
remember to duck; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t47.jpg $165.00
MS71 Independence Tool Co. dovetail saw, serial #14, making it
the 14th made; made prior to Lie-Nielsen's acquisition,
it's essentially a handmade saw by a partnership of Peter
Taran and yours truly to recreate the fine saws of yore,
it inspired countless others to try their hand at sawmaking
when they recognized its success; made at a time when
the rebirth of handtooling was in its infancy, this saw
was instrumental in the resurrection of handtools that
now populate today's market; barely used, well cared for,
if you missed the last train out of Theresa, NY, here's
a chance to relive the wild days of late 20th century
toolmaking; middle:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t47.jpg $365.00
MS72 Another Independence Tool Co. saw, but by Lie-Nielsen, it
was made right after Lie-Nielsen bought the line, they
stamped it with the same serial number as the previous;
a bit larger than the original, it's 11" long and with
14ppi; carefully used, with leather case, I believe these
are nicer than what's currently offered; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t47.jpg $225.00
MS73 Four Clico spoon bits and reamer; made to satisfy the re-
surrection of the Windsor chair making, these are barely
used and no longer offered; widths of 3/8", 7/16", 1/2",

made, I can't recall who produced them; good mass, one

confused with the lower quality new stuff today:

MS77 No.1 Automatic Drill in its original tin case and with
six original points; made by Goodell Brothers of Greenfield,

very popular design, it's great at boring small diameter
holes; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t50.jpg $115.00
MS78 Pair of marking gauges; an earlier Veritas with disk for
marking a variety of materials, and an owner made all steel

MS82 Gunmetal shoulder plane based upon G.Miller's pattern, he
of London; with a pile of castings here, from long ago,
this is one of the very few that were machined and fit
with a Hock iron, someday I'll have my son machine the rest
here; stuffed with ebony, steel sole, mouth as find as can
be, the front of the wedge, where it's within the throat,
needs finishing; good mass, it'll make a fine worker at a
price far less than a Miller; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t54.jpg $290.00
MS83 Five carving chisels with nicely worked handles, each well
done by an owner, perhaps as an aid to identify their cut
by sight or feel; different makers, some owner made, a
variety of patterns, narrowest is 1/16" front bent gouge,
widest a 7/8" straight by James Marsh; these are nice;

MS84 Three unusual bent gouges, one by Butcher, others by Ash;
with original matching handles, made ca.1875, always to-

later rework; outcannel of medium sweep, widths of 1/2",
7/8", and 1 1/8"; middle three:

MS85 "Pat 09" crazy combination tool; likely with more tools
of any, this cast iron thing has a corkscrew, pliers,
nippers, knife sharpener, can opener, cork press, tack
puller, wrench, hammer, etc. all on its 7" length; with
no damage, most japanning, it still has the sliding bit
for opening cans which is often missing; an experimental
model was in the works during the 1970's to add a cap
snaffler, pocket fishing rod, a microphone, but not a
slap chop; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t67.jpg $155.00
MS86 Rare patented folding drawknife to fit in the pocket;
looking like a common pocketknife, it was made by a
local and notable knifemaker, Aaron Burkinshaw, an
immigrant from Sheffield, England who established his
business in Pepperell, MA; patented by J.W.Peirce on
February 29, 1876, the 'blade' with a roughly 2 3/4"
long cutting edge, folds back on the handle that looks
to have rosewood grips riveted on it, a loop at the
far end serves as a grip; in great, little used con-
dition, it's clearly stamped with the patentee's name,
the Burkinshaw name is stamped at the hinge; a clever
design with a bit of a problem should the edge make a
sudden stop (from a knot or whatever) and it folds
back on itself, woe to whatever finger(s) are nearby
when that happens; a great thing, the second I've seen,
this was made about 15 miles from where this list
originates, the image fails to capture its true great
condition; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t67.jpg $690.00
MS87 Clean Millers Falls No.1 circular spoke shave; as found
worker with good amount of original red finish, free of
damage, a very popular shave for curved work; top left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t68.jpg $80.00
MS88 Pair of clean and little used hollowing/shaping spoke
shaves; cast iron, different sweeps, they have their full
width cutters; many now use them as a travisher, wooden
shoe lasts were the primary objects for these, they can
work anything that requires curvature, chairmakers find
them quite useful; top right two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t68.jpg $95.00
MS89 Windsor beader; the second model, which proved to be the
best selling of the three designs, the cutter's carrier
can be slid left or right; with original label, this one
never had the ebonized finish; single circular cutter
with six different profiles; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t68.jpg $130.00
MS90 Pair of useful metallic rules; a 12" Starrett No.414 that
is graduated to 1/8" and 1/16" increments, it saw barely
any use; and a Chesterman two-foot, one-fold, No.5307 brass
rule with inches on one face, metric on the other, it es-
caped the buffing wheel that seem to fascinate most English
tool collectors; both can be used as is; top two:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t69.jpg $85.00
MS91 New old stock Rabone No.1167 three-foot, four-fold boxwood

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t69.jpg $50.00
MS92 Uncommon E.M.Boynton/New York 14" backsaw; as found, free
of damage, with split nut screws, it has the standard
pattern handle, not the typical one where a handle screw
is secured through the spine; full plate, little used, I
can see a fair bit of the original etching under the grime;
bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t70.jpg $155.00
MS93 S.W.Palmer's patent on a Young&McMaster/Auburn/NY 22"
jointer; patented February 3, 1857, it was one of several
early patents that made setting the iron easier on common
wooden body bench planes; with a double iron by W.Field, of
Pawtucket, RI, he later partnered Jeremiah Arnold, the two
renamed their partnership to The Providence Tool Co.; in
fine shape, inlaid marquetry strike button forward of the
mouth, a slender splinter off the tote's horn, some red
finish in the throat (perhaps as an owner mark), the plane
managed to survive much nicer than most; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t73.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t73a.jpg $275.00
MS94 Six Irwin pattern twist augers in their original box; the
smaller number set with sizes commonly used, it's as
found, with normal cosmetic wear, all are usable; diameters
of 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", and 1"; box's clasp is
missing in action, some of the brads on the hinges are
likewise; top:

MS95 Smaller scorp with unique carved handle featuring a head;
scorp measures 1 1/4" at its fullest width, the head looks
to be mahogany, the curled long locks resemble a barrister's
wig, someone put in a fair bit of effort to make this, it's
certain you'll have a good grip on it due to all the
contours; left:

MS96 Another carved handle tool, this an owl's head on a 1/2"
bent gouge by Addis; nice detail all around, the back of
the handle is flat so it cant roll around; eyes and beak
picked out in black paint; well done, it was found with
the previous; right:

MS97 Veritas low angle block plane with optional squirrel tail
handle and knob; earlier production with the three circular
grips milled on each side, it was used once and put away;

MS98 Goodell-Pratt bench vise with 2" jaws; best quality and a
solid worker in need of a clean, it quickly clamps onto

to the double alignment rods, one above and one below the
adjusting screw; top right:

MS100 Spiers/Ayr parallel side dovetailed steel smoothing plane
with rosewood stuffing; a never messed with and 100%
original example that's free of the common damage, it has
some minor superficial rusts spots from sitting; 2 1/8"
double iron by Ward&Payne, it, its cap iron, and the bed
are all stamped with the assembly number "2", extra fine
mouth, with so many dodgy dogs out there, this one is a
contender for best of show after a clean; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t76.jpg $585.00
MS101 Norris A5 smoothing plane; as found, with previous, it
has some rust from sitting, the worst of it is shown in
the image, the sole and other side are way nicer, what's
present will clean as it was stored in an unheated area
and formed from warm and cold seasonal changes; all
original parts, plenty of life left to the 2" iron, the
finish is nearly 100%, this will clean well to make a
fine worker; nearly every cabinetmaker in post-war
England had one of these; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t76.jpg $385.00
MS102 20 1/2" cast jointer with mahogany knob and tote, it's
fit with a 2 1/2" I.Sorby parallel iron; I suspect this
is manufactured as I've seen others that are identical,
there is no maker mark on any I've seen; found with the
previous, it was likewise stored in an unheated area and
has general superficial rust that will clean, most of
the japanning remains; very well made, loads of mass,
with owner mark, wood will run for cover when this is
nearby; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t77.jpg $295.00
MS103 Auger handle for driving larger diameter augers; favored
by timberframers and similar trades, one handle unscrews
to accept the auger, when tightened back, a rotating
collar adds more pressure to keep the handle secured
tightly; a worker, with owner name branded in each handle,
I believe this is a James Swan product; bottom:

can be used as is; a Stanley #93 that dates to ca.WWI,

marking and for marking mortices; the Stearns has some
minor grime on it; top right two:

plating on the head; flat faces; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t78.jpg $60.00
MS106 3 1/2" slick by Underhill Edge Tool; with its original
handle, this is an earlier production that saw very little
use, it has normal storage tarnish on the top, the backside
is much nicer with roughly 50% of the original surface
bright; 27" overall length, end of handle shows some rough-
ness and very harmless checks from when it was banged with
a mallet, using it properly by pushing it will no make the
handle worse; will easily clean to be a great worker; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/feb/t79.jpg $225.00
MS107 Yankee No.1003 bench drill; the smaller of the two marvels

for those who want to recreate driving nails the old way;
another with oval eye and handle wedge in it, there is
chipping on the claws; the last another strap where those
are separate from the head, they are loose, and it's a
good one for recreating the head flying off the handle;
all handles show some chipping/checks, they are still
strong give their age and the rough work they performed;
