‘tis a sad day in north central
Massachusetts with the recent
official
announcement of an American institution’s passing, Union
Products of
Leominster (also the home of my dear ball and chain).
It’s a good bet that 99.99% of you have
never heard of the firm,
but nearly all of
you, including you global subscribers, recognize
their product, the
iconic plastic pink flamingo.
Yes, the company known for its cheesy
plastic gnomes, santas,
elves, and
flamingos, ceased production of those 2006, but the final
nail in the coffin
is the Chapter 7 liquidation about to occur in
federal court. The
firm is not merely dead, it’s really most sincerely
dead.
To allay the sorrowful news, there’s
lots of quality stuff on this
list, which, so far,
has outlasted the plastic and concrete kitsch
found on lawns
worldwide.
So weep not for Union Products,
operators are standing by to take
your order........
If you have questions about what the
Stanley numbers are, you can
look the planes up
on Blood&Gore:
http://www.supertool.com/stanleybg/stan0.htm
If there is anything in particular that
you're after, do ping
me as there is a lot
of stuff here that isn't on the list; the
list just represents
a snapshot of the previous month's haul with
none of the stuff
having appeared on a previous list.
Please email me prior to sending money
so that you can be sure
the tool is still up
for grabs. Also, prices do not include shipping,
which is the exact
amount that it takes to go from me to you.
This list goes out to many people on
the first Monday of the month.
So, if you see
something you want, it's the quickest finger on the
trigger that wins
the duel.
Also, due to the nature of selling over
the wires, tools are sold
on a first come,
first serve basis. The first person to say "I'll
take it", gets it.
I have to operate this way as some will take a
few days to get back
to me with their interest in a particular item,
and it's unfair to
keep others waiting who are willing to buy immed-
iately.
I reserve the right to correct
typographical errors, after the
list goes out. I
rarely make them, but when I do, they can be
major ones.
If you’re the kind of person who puts a
straightedge to the sole
of a #40, to check
for flatness, or who tosses a plane on a scale
to weigh it against
what it states in the Stanley catalogues, you’ll
need to take your
business elsewhere. I’ll wish you luck finding
perfection in
something that was never made, nor intended to be,
perfect. You guys
know who you are, and it’s best for both of us
that our paths don’t
cross.
Lastly, and I hate to have to mention
this, but if you tell me
that money is on the
way for something you want, and you never make
good on it, we won’t
be doing business in the future. It’s unfair,
actually downright discourteous,
to others who want the same thing,
and I tell them it’s
sold. Pull this on me, and you’re exorcised
from the list.
Sorry, but I don’t tolerate this behavior well at
all.
Don't forget the cool new tools that
I'm making - a jazzy layout
knife being used by
professionals (made cover of Feb '98 FWW!); a
detachable block
plane handle designed to fit your 20 degree
block planes, and
the finest bench plane in production today, the
Bed Rock #601. You
can see all this at:
http://www.supertool.com/newtools.htm
Finally, remember that you don't have
to be a connoisseur (did
I spell that
correctly?) to shop here. You can be a wirehead, a
metalhead, a
zipperhead, a propellerhead, a deadhead, a cokehead,
or even a
knuckle-dragging oaf, just like me, to shop here, as
long as your dinero
is green.
Thanks for shopping, and remember, no
letters/words were injured
when writing this
list...
FEATURED TOOL OF THE MONTH
******** **** ** *** *****
FT1 The most amazing pile of complex molding planes I’ve
ever
seen, all by Gleave of Manchester and each with
the same
owner’s stamp; most are infinitely complex
massive
blocks of wood, these were used for the most
formal work;
finding one alone is extra special, but to
find a
matching group of 17 is unheard of; all are as
found,
several with missing irons and/or wedges, but
save for
one, they are in little used shape with no
worm or
rot; once restored, you’ll be the envy of users
and
collectors around the world, they will easily be
worth the
bargain price now; simply amazing, I’ve snapped
an image
of each from the heel, in no particular order,
and added
a brief description of its condition and
stock
width (not the width of the profile):
The entire pile:

ST8 Rosewood and boxwood body #24 transitional plane; a
reproduction by renaissance man, Jim Moon, who when
not
removing an appendix, spleen, or liver, turns to
high end
woodworking, this is one of his creations
based on
the Stanley originals (only about five known)
where the
body is rosewood with a dovetailed boxwood
section;
never used, Jim went a bit beyond Stanley’s
effort by
plating the cast iron making this a unique
creation;
the originals cost several thousand dollars,
here’s a
bargain in comparison and made much better
than
Stanley ever did; stamped on the toe with his mark,
these
come along once in a blue moon;

ST9 Bed Rock #605 1/2 oversized jack plane; while this
one make

it’s
actually a diamond in the rust with 98% japanning;
barely
used, it sat for decades unused and developed
superficial rust; will clean to be a great example, it
has all

ST12 Extra clean and rare #101 1/2 bull
nose miniature
thumb
plane; the cleanest I’ve owned, with 95% plating,

propaganda, they found favor over in the UK:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t37.jpg
$655.00
ST13 Uncommon #31 1/2-F folding boxwood
shrink rule; used
by
patternmakers to calculate shrinkage as metal cools,
this one 3/16”
per foot; in used, but never abused shape,
the joint
is fine, no owner’s marks, this model is far
less
common than the standard non-folding model; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t39.jpg
$95.00
ST14 Clean and complete #55 combination
plane; with all
cutters,
and nearly all nickel plating, this one is
a bargain
worker as I bought it reasonably; no damage,
the only
thing it’s missing is the original screw
driver
and instructions; these things really do work,
contrary
to my online tongue-in-cheek slapping, you
just need
to be patient with their set-up and
selective
in the stock you use:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t43.jpg
$490.00
ST15 #42 saw set, brand new in original
box with original
instruction; the most popular and easiest to use saw
set, all
you need do is add the saw; missing the
circular
saw blade attachment, most guys chucked that
when they
realized it was easier just to buy a new
one,
you’ll never need that; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t47.jpg
$45.00
ST16 #60 1/2 low angle block plane; an
extra clean and
damage
free example with all original parts; a 1950’s
example
that has nearly all japanning, just some
localized
superficial rust on the sole, which will
clean
quickly; a very handy and popular plane with
the
lowest angle of any Stanley plane; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t52.jpg
$55.00
ST17 #7 jointer; a clean sound worker
that dates from ca.
1895;
with all original parts, it’s developed that nice
brown
patina on the exterior; japanning is 95%, iron
is full length,
perfect rosewood, the lever cap has
some
chipping on the leading edge (a lesson for you –
don’t use
it for unscrewing the cap iron); top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t72.jpg
$135.00
ST18 #5 1/4 junior jack plane; a 1950’s
example with all
original
parts, 99% japanning, and in little used
condition; a very handy plane for cleaning up smaller
areas;
bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t72.jpg
$85.00
ST19 #602 Bed Rock smoothing plane;
being offered as a
bargain
worker as half the back tab has been snapped
off, a
common thing for #2-size planes, and there is
some
chipping on the lever cap; the tote bolt is still
securely
attached; plane needs a cleaning, it’ll be a
good
worker for those who don’t want to dump the extra
dinero on
a perfect one:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t73.jpg
$385.00
ST20 #39 7/8” dado plane; a ca.WWI
model, with all original
parts and
no damage; in need of a cleaning, the wider

perfect
size for today’s stock thickness; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t78.jpg
$160.00
ST22 Good #198 double arm marking gauge
with rosewood fence;
the
upscale model of the popular #98, it has the pizza
wheel roller
scribes as well as the conventional pin
scribes
at each end of the graduated arms; usual dings
in the
head, still a fine worker; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t81.jpg
$85.00
ST23 #40 scrub plane; a better than
usual example, from the

wood
other than wear along top edge of horn, 90%
japanning, a perfect worker for preparing the wood
prior to
the fine planes; bottom:

$75.00
ST24 #39 1/2 type 1 6” level; with the
graphic casting, the
vial
plate has the patent date stamped in it and has
nearly
all plating; no damage, original vial, a nice
example;
top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t88.jpg
$55.00
ST25 Pair of #1 bronze trammels mounted
on a brass bar; the
smallest
size offered, 3 1/4" long, all original parts
including
the sweetheart marked points; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t88.jpg
$65.00
ST26 #85 boxwood razor edge spoke
shave; the best spoke shave
made, the
iron attacks the wood at the lowest possible
angle;
the mouth can be set for finer/thicker shaving
easily;
2” wide blade, this one saw use, has the usual
hang
hole, no chipping on the body, it’s a perfect
worker
for the finest work; top:

$80.00
ST27 Scarce #63X spoke shave; with a 1
1/2” wide blade and
a curved
sole (front to back), this one was designed
to be
indestructible and found favor in trade schools;
all
original parts, sweetheart marked iron, 90%
japanning, it’s ideal for curved work; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t89.jpg
$65.00

use out
of the box; Stanley’s best brace; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t90.jpg
$95.00
ST29 Bed Rock #606C corrugated for
plane; with all original
parts,
including the “BED ROCK” embossed lever cap,

ca.1915 example has 99% japanning, and saw hardly
any use;

exterior, the way we wish all of them are, it’s
as nice
an example as I’ve owned; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t93.jpg
$215.00
ST30 #71 router with maple knobs, in
the original box; a
clean and
little used example, with all original parts,
it has
the earlier maple knobs, which I favor over the
black
painted ones on the later models; it pre-dates
the
introduction of the V-cutter, a later one was
added,
it’s also earlier than the fence; box is in
fine
shape, with usual hole puncture on the top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t94.jpg
$110.00
ST31 Very scarce type 1 #49 match
plane; the japanned
finish,
patent date embossed below the floral handle,
beaded
knob, and the tiny steel screws set this one
apart
from the later model; in fine shape, with no
damage,
japanning is 90%; owner neatly stamped his
name in
the knob, the cutters are original, including
the wider
one that came with the plane for increasing
the working
capacity of the tool; a great example of
a very
hard to find model; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t95.jpg
$190.00
ST32 Good #82 scraper with rosewood
sole; with good length
to the
original sweetheart marked blade, nearly all
original
nickel plating, and uniform thickness to the
rosewood
sole; a fine worker, with owner’s marks in

shape; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t99.jpg
$85.00
ST33 1 1/2" Everlasting chisel; a
difficult to find size,
this one
saw little use, and has no damage; usual
localized
tarnish on the blade, and bang marks on

11
1/2" long; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t99.jpg $95.00
ST34 #19 knuckle joint block plane;
as-found, with no

dates
from ca.1915; one of Stanley’s best planes; top:

WOOD PLANES
**** ******
WP1 Fine bead cluster; an uncommon profile, this one cuts
three
adjacent 1/4" diameter beads over an arc for a
delicate
accent; professionally made, but unsigned,
with usual
owner’s stamps, it’s a ca.1800 plane that
just
needs a honing to have it up and running; a fine
plane:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t4.jpg
$135.00
WP2 One of the nicest molders I’ve had in some time, this
a rabbet
style complex molder by Greenslade; in nearly
brand new
condition, it cuts a 1 5/8” wide profile
that’s
typically used on paneling; no owner’s marks,
no nail
holes, it’s a great chunky plane that’s sure
to become
a real favorite; two inconsequential chips
at heel
of boxing strips is only ‘apology’, it’s
otherwise
new:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t5.jpg
$355.00
WP3 As fine a moving fillster as I’ve owned, this a fully
dovetail
boxed one by Marples (with the fancy ribbon
stamp);
the best solution for rabbeting, it’s never
been
altered; original boxwood nicker wedge, it has
the
slotted fence for removing the iron when honing;
no
owner’s marks, some trivial roughness on the wedge
finial:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t6.jpg
$165.00
WP4 Two chunky center beads with large adjustable fences;
both by
Griffiths/Norwich, they are the perfect
solutions
for sticking a bead off the edge of the
stock;
one is a single 1/4" diameter bead, the fence
on this
one is original, the other a reed of two 1/8”
diameter,
the fence on this one was added the day the
original
owner bought it; usual owner’s stamps, these
are fine
workers in sound shape:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t9.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t9a.jpg
$195.00
WP5 Clean Marples beech smoothing plane in its original
box;
coffin shape, 2” wide double iron, eight inches
long, it
was used briefly then stuck back in the box;
end label
on box is missing; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t18.jpg
$85.00
WP6 Odd T.J.McMaster 1/2" (depth of cut) cove, quirked ogee
and
bevel, a most unusual profile; in fine shape, with
no
damage, usual owner’s stamp, there’s a lot of twists
and turns
packed into such a small profile:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t30.jpg
$155.00
WP7 Fabulous N.Little bolection molder; in as pristine
shape as
a pre-1800 New England molding plane can be,
this
beauty is the nicest example by this shadowy
north
shore (of Massachusetts) maker I’ve seen; far
less
common than the L.Little mark, the book underrates
the
scarcity of N.Little, and I see a few dozen L’s for
ever N;
10” long, broad flat chamfers, never cleaned or
abused,
small owner’s stamp, perfect wedge, no nail
holes,
it’s odd that this one wasn’t boxed at the
quirk;
cuts a finely proportioned 3/4" deep profile,
the only
bad thing that can be said about this is some
minor
staining from spillage over 200 years ago, I
think
that adds to it; I would have killed for this
one were
I still collecting early New England planes,
it’s that
nice:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t44.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t44a.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t44b.jpg $495.00
WP8 Uncommon toted Mathieson plough plane with wedged arms;
wedged
arms are normally the stuff of untoted ploughs,
this one
certainly didn’t sell in the quantity that
those
did; in sound user shape, with usual dings here
and
there, the wedge finial shows the worst of that;
nicely
cleaned; top:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t45.jpg
$140.00
WP9 Pair of shorter 3/4" match planes with integral totes
by
M.Crannel; these compact 9 1/2" long planes were
made by a
few western Massachusetts and Albany, NY
area
makers but never in any great quantity as most
are
around 11” long; sound workers, never altered or
abused,
with steel plated fences for longer wear and
greater
accuracy, they center the groove on 3/4" thick
stock, a
rather uncommon dimension to find as most are
size for
7/8” thick stock:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t48.jpg
$90.00
WP10 A virtually unused fully boxed
3/8” double bead by M.
Copeland,
this one was used once or twice than forgotten;
with no
damage to the boxwood, perfect wedges, owner’s
mark at
toe, it was lightly cleaned some time ago; the
perfect
plane for sticking beads when the grain changes
where the
plane is flipped end for end and planed left
handed;
would be difficult to find a nicer example:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t49.jpg
$145.00
WP11 A bold Israel White toted molding
plane with his
elaborate
and classic maker’s mark; designed to cut
an “INCH
BY INCH AND 3/8” (individually stamped in the
heel)
quirked ogee and bevel of most pleasing pro-
portions, the plane measures 13
1/2" long; in never
altered
or abused shape, no owner’s marks, no damage
about the
wedge, lignum boxing, it’s a fine example
of this
eagerly collected Philadelphia maker:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t50.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t50a.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t50b.jpg $355.00
WP12 Graduated set of three Ohio Tool
Co. square ovolos;
rarely
found in multiples, this set has three of the
more
popular sizes of 1/2", 3/4", and 7/8”; always
together,
and marked with the catalog number on the
toe, no
owner’s stamps, and in far nicer than usual
shape,
these have always been together since they
left the
factory:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t51.jpg
$185.00
WP13 Pair of extra clean dado planes by
Marples; 3/8” and
1/2"
widths, they look to be unused; always together,
one of
the easiest wooden planes to use, they are
waiting
to get to work:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t57.jpg
$125.00
WP14 Matching graduated set of three
center bead by Invicta;
still
with most of the decal, double boxed, no owner’s
marks, these look to be unused; with the
sizes and
prices
penciled on the heel, they are 3/8”, 1/2", and
3/4"; perfect workers for sticking a bead anywhere on
the face
of the stock:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t58.jpg
$145.00
WP15 An amazing pair of Middleton/York
flat chamfer cabinet
pitch
bolections; 3/8” and 4/8” sizes, these planes
were used
a couple times, and then forgotten for over
200
years; never cleaned, with nice embossed owner’s
mark
(same on each plane), they show minor banging on
heel
(looks much worse in the image); I’ve never had
a
matching pair of these, and they are in phenomenal
shape:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t59.jpg
$295.00
WP16 Another fabulous Middleton/York
molder, this one a
7/8”
(depth of cut) square, cove, and astragal; in
never
abused shape, used just a few times, it only
shows
banging on the heel from backing the wedge/iron
off; with
a nice embossed owner’s stamp, never cleaned
or
altered, it’s a wonderful example:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t61.jpg
$165.00
WP17 Mate to WP15, this one a
diminutive 3/8” (depth of
cut)
square, cove, and astragal with a cabinet pitch;
has same
owner’s mark, in same condition, and is as
nice as
they come; a very difficult size to find, it’s
one
superb plane:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t62.jpg
$195.00
WP18 A very unusual Preston molder with
early oval logo and
Lichfield
St. address; in fine shape, never altered or
abused,
it cuts a 5/8” deep torus bead and sharp bevel;
usual
owner’s stamps, it saw very little use; I can’t
recall
having this odd profile before:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t63.jpg
$165.00
WP19 An extra complex molder by Haw;
with more twists and
turns
than a Chubby Checker on acid performance, it
cuts a
3/4" deep quirked ovolo, fillet, cove, raised
fillet,
square, and exaggerated cove (I think I just
went
blind and lost my mind deciphering that one!);
maker’s
mark is a bit weak, the plane is in fine
shape,
with some minor wear and a single owner’s
stamp; if
you can figure out this profile, the meaning
of life
will be a no-brainer:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t65.jpg
$355.00
WP20 Very rare rule joint planes by
Marples with odd feature
of one
being slipped (likely to tweak the joint); used
to make
the ‘complex’ joint on drop leaf tables, these
are in
fine shape, with no damage, and usual owner’s
mark;
matching rule joint planes are difficult to find
by any
maker, they seem to be much more so by UK
makers:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t66.jpg
$290.00
WP21 Tiny 1/8" astragal by Mutter;
with cabinet pitched
iron,
this one was designed to work harder woods; in
fine
shape, a 200+ year old example that was never
altered
or abused, the small astragals are very
difficult
to find, and lend themselves nicely to
furniture; usual owner’s stamps; the profile is good
and
crisp, although the image doesn’t show that; I
measured
this one across the bead’s diameter, which
Mutter
did as it’s stamped “1” in the heel, the common
numbering
system to designate 1/8ths of an inch; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t67.jpg
$115.00
WP22 Crisp T.Turned astragal; bead
measures 1/4" diameter,
this one
saw practically no use; with usual owner’s
marks,
never cleaned or altered, it, too, is a nice
size for
furniture; right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t67.jpg
$55.00
WP23 Graduated set of five beads by
E.Preston; in never
abused or
altered shape, always together, diameters
of 3/16”,
5/16”, 3/8”, 3/4", and 7/8”; all single
boxed,
with good surfaces, fine workers, and in much
nicer than
usual bead condition:

$185.00
WP24 Very uncommon matching sash planes
and template by
Griffiths/Norwich, along with sash scribing gouge by
Frost/Norwich (sold by him); sets like this are very
difficult
to find these days as most get ripped apart
when
numbskulls pillage tool chests in total ignorance;
luckily,
these stayed together, and all the same
owner’s stamp; in fine shape, these are a true
survivor:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t70.jpg
$275.00
WP25 Most unusual special purpose
curved dado/grooving
plane; likely used by a sashmaker,
stair builder, or
carriagemaker, it’s 7 3/8” long, and is in perfect
shape;
the sole and fence both have a slight curvature
to them,
the arms are secured with long slender wedges;
very well
made, it’s not a UK product; a really jazzy
little
plane:

WP26 pre-1800 New England double bead;
commonly used on the
top edges
of drawer sides or along edges of shelves,
this fine plane has broad flat chamfers
and a stylish
wedge; 9
3/4" long, made of beech, it’s in never
altered
or cleaned condition, the profile is 1/2" wide;
no
owner’s stamps, it has the early initial maker’s
mark of
“E.M.”; a fine worker, it’s a rare profile;

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t76a.jpg $125.00
WP27 Another fine pre-1800 New England
plane, this one came
with the
previous, but cuts a 1/2" deep bolection; same
shape,
different maker’s initials of “P.A”, it in fine,
never
messed with shape; unsprung, it has the charming
looking
of the earlier examples of this popular
profile;

WP28 Uncommon pair of American-made
side rabbets by Barry &
Way
N.York (mark weak); in as-found shape, never
altered,
original parts, they show expected scuffs
and wear
from use, they have plenty of life left in
them, and
are priced as bargain workers:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t82.jpg
$90.00
WP29 Odd sash fillister with rosewood
boxed sole; a standard
simple
model, have the sole is boxed with rosewood; not
marked
with a maker’s name, there are plenty of owner’s
marks to
make up for that; plane saw use, with wedge
finial
showing that, the arm wedges are good replace-
ments; a
decent worker:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t83.jpg
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t83a.jpg $75.00
WP30 Classic New England ca.1800
molding plane; with broad
flat
chamfers, stylized relived wedge, gouge cuts on
the stop,
layout lines, and non-boxed quirk, this one
has all
the features of that unique style that was
soon to
be standardized; made of beech, 9 1/2" long,
it cuts a
3/4" deep quirked ovolo and fillet of a
pleasing
proportion; never cleaned, no damage, no
maker’s
or owner’s marks, it’s a professionally made
plane
with lots of charisma:

http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t91a.jpg $115.00
WP31 Proving that complexity knows no
bounds when it comes
to wooden
planes, here’s a backwoods New England entry
in the
“Try to Stump Freud” contest; a whopping 11”
long
beech body, with flat chamfers, it’s in never
altered
condition, the wedge is a later replacement;
profile
is 1/2" deep and 1 3/8” wide; body shows some
checking,
this one is a classic Georgian profile of
colonial
America origin, often used in fireplace
surrounds:

WP32 Miniature Preston hollow; 3
1/2" long, in fine shape,
never
altered or abused; usual owner’s stamps, cuts a
1/4”
width; a crisp little plane; bottom:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t107.jpg $110.00
WP33 Strange double ebony boxed rabbet;
a nicely made
craftsman-made product, with a cabinet pitch, there’s
a strip
of rosewood along each edge of the 1” wide
sole; in
fine shape, with a unique look, the image
fails to
capture that; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t113.jpg $95.00
WP34 Primitive bone boxed torus bead; a
ca.1800 American
made
tool, the maker of this one chose a nasty grain
blank for
the stock, there are knots, tear out, and
cleaving
marks on that which lend to its charm; an
auxiliary
strip, to convert to a bead, is missing,
it’s
otherwise in fine shape with usual owner’s
marks;
right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t113.jpg $95.00
WP35 Parker 3/8” (depth of cut) Roman
ogee; an uncommon
dimension, a sound worker with no damage or alteration,
and no
owner’s stamps; left:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t116.jpg $75.00
WP36 Rare 5/16” (depth of cut) Roman
ogee; I can’t recall
having
one of this dimension before, it’s a nice
craftsman-made example, with usual owner’s stamps; a
few nail
holes on the bottom of the fence, from shimming
it for a special application, it’s a fine worker;
right:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t116.jpg $95.00
WP37 W.Moss fully boxed reeding plane;
six 1/8” diameter beads
are jammed adjacent to make a
pleasing 3/4" wide profile;
in fine
shape, with no damage or alteration, owner pricked
his
initials at the nose, it’s in much better than usual
wood
plane shape:
http://www.supertool.com/forsale/t117.jpg $125.00
WP38 Extremely rare Garrett’s patent
toothing plane made by
Marples;
clearly stamped with his patent info behind
the iron,
it’s in fine shape showing minimal signs of
use; an
extra strange iron is what this one is all
about, it
should be obvious to the casual woodworker
that this
plane was destined to flop as a toothing
plane
doesn’t need a ‘cap iron’ to function; there
are less
than five know of these, and this one is in
premium
collector quality condition:

taking advantage of
wood’s

MI34 Ten joiner’s morticing chisels
with boxwood handles;

augers, reamers, and a forked bit for split nut
screws;
while these braces are a dime a dozen, they
aren’t in
this condition and with the spring-loaded lever
action
chuck, which works perfectly; sold by J.Buck, it
has an 8”
sweep; a good amount of original finish
remains,
the lignum head has no play, this one will work
as great
as it looks:

MI41 Record 077A bull nose rabbet;
identical to the earlier
Preston
model, which Record continued after buying out
that
company’s line, this nickel plated model has most
original
plating and no damage about the mouth; 1 1/8”
wide
iron, the nose section can be removed for chisel
plane
work; originally sold with a small shim, to open
the mouth
for coarser work, this one is missing that,
you can
stick anything there to accomplish the same;
great
quality; top:

large brass plating
about the
vial; clearly stamped with the Preston name,

large
empty hole you see is original to the tool and
saved the

hang
hole; a beautiful level; top:

MI46 A striking rosewood and boxwood
try square; a wonderful
example
of what the gifted craftsman can produce, this
one has
exquisite grain pattern to the rosewood handle,
the 16”
boxwood blade almost being overpowered by it;
with real
age to it, and in fine shape, with small check
in the
boxwood where it’s tenoned into the handle, the
maker/owner neatly stamped his name in the handle; never
worry about the heartbreak of pitting with this
beauty,

usual
owner’s marks, this rosewood stuffed smoother is
in far
nicer than usual shape and retains its original
marked Mathieson iron and cap iron; never
cleaned, there
is the
usual oxidation on the steel, that will brighten
or leave
it as is; a fine worker that’s never been
through
the usual UK toolmill:

MI48 The most magnificent set of
Forstner bits you’ll ever
see,
these are the real deal and not some modern made
in
Bulgaristan product; 29 in total, graduated from 1/2"
diameter
all the way up to a nut-busting 3” diameter
(this
beast measures 10 3/4" long!), they are out of
a
patternshop that did highly specialized work; from
the New Britain,
CT manufacturer of Connecticut Valley
Manufacturing Co, you can’t used these in a brace
unless
you posses super-human strength; the larger ones
require a
3/4" chuck, the smaller 1/2"; in fine shape,
never
abused, you’ll definitely out-bore your
competition with these:

MI51 Good cast infill smoothing plane;
at just 6 1/2" long,
it’s in
sound worker shape and is being offered at a
bargain
price as the front infill is MIA, something
that is a
simple fix; with shaped side rails, bronze
lever
cap, it’s never been cleaned; a small bruise at
the top
of the corner area of the casting and a small
crack at
the heel (from over-whacking that), it’ll
be a great
little plane with little effort; right:

MI53 Seven barely used Ohio Tool Co.
bevel edge socketed
pairing
chisels, along with one gouge (eight in

for a
loving home; best quality, each with original
handle
save for one, you can snarf that from the
gouge
(that’s why it’s being offered in the pile);

1/8”, 1/2", 3/4", 1 1/4" (some minor tarnish
at
socket), 1 1/2", 1 3/4", and 2”; not a spec of

have real age to them; old spoon bits, no
matter
their source, are difficult to find; bottom:

parts, 90% japanning, and in sound worker shape, a hang
hole was drilled at one end; top:

MI109 A unique bark spud by James
Howarth; with a rosewood
handle, and just 9 1/2” long, this special purpose
tool must have been used on smaller stuff; has its
original leather cover (tattered), there is a brass
bit
morticed into the handle for hanging it; in usual
bark spud shape, with pitting and a crack in the
handle, it nevertheless is a rare thing and still
useable; bottom:

MI110 Great miniature workbench; made
just like the real
working ones, this 12” long one is a perfectly scaled
replica of that found in a working shop; everything
moves, there are two vises and a sliding drawer; not
a
recent creation, it’s ca.WWII, and the perfect
thing to display your miniature planes; two wooden
pins that align the top to the base are snapped off,
that’s a simple repair:

MI111 Extremely rare Preston router
with the large cast
knobs; while these may look like they were added
to
the tool, they weren’t, as two others are
identical to this one; Preston must have had some
left
over knobs from their side rabbets and did an
experimental run using those on the router; with
two
original cutters, the router is free of damage,
and
has most plating worn off; ready to fill out a
collection of the seemingly endless variety of
Preston stuff:

MI112 Another super rare Preston item,
this the strange
one
hand quirk router; an L-shaped thing, with two
fences, it was designed for routing in tight areas;
has
the vernier adjuster position in a unique position,
the
original cutter, unique to the tool, is present;
in
fine shape, with nearly all japanning, this is the
only one of these I’ve ever offered:

MI113 Very rare first model Preston
chamfer shave; with the
Y-shape main casting, that was soon changed for greater
strength, these rarely come along in undamaged and
little used condition; all original parts, 95%
japanning, and typical Preston quality; bottom:

MI114 The most amazing and pristine
Buck Brothers incannel
gouges you will ever see; each and every one of them
is
in brand new condition with flawless turned fruit-
wood handles that are stamped with the stag’s head
logo; these came with the Ohio Tool Co. bevel edge
chisels listed earlier, these somehow managed to be
overlooked
for the past 100 years; simply amazing,
and
never will you fine a more virgin set, unless
you
have a Wayback Machine to purchase them new:

MI115 Rare planemaker’s float; a beech
body that has an
integral handle, it carries a 2 1/4” by 6” double
sided rasp that’s stamped S.Osborne&Co, reported
as
a ca.1825 planemaker; two brass nuts secured the
rasp to the stock, the tool is nicely cleaned, there
is
an early embossed name stamp in the endgrain;
top:

MI116 The most complete Preston quirk
router, with four
original fences and six cutters of varying thickness;
never altered or abused, with nearly all japanning,
this is a rare survivor due to all the parts; best
you’ll find, they never show up
this complete; bottom:

MI117 Great solid mahogany tool chest
of a much smaller
size,
roughly half-size a typical chest, the images
fail to show just how nice it is; in perfect shape,
still with the original key, you’ll likely be fighting
the
Mrs. to store your stuff in it; 32” wide by 20”
deep by 19 1/2" tall, it has its original dark paint
and
owner’s initials; dates to last quarter of the
18th century, the mahogany has a rich red color to it;
drawers were recently felt lined, this was, until
recently,
used to store the best tools of an English
cabinetmaker, who fit it with casters (easily removed);
I
nearly kept this one myself, but lack of room forces
me to pass it on:

MI118 Rugged, solid, massive, and
unique combination diaper
changing table and workbench; with a solid 3 1/2"
thick laminated maple top, this massive thing is for
the
serious woodworker, who wants a bench that will
only be moved once - when it’s placed in the shop; the
top
is 80 1/2" long and 32” deep, it dates from the
1920’s; has a seriously heavy cast iron shoulder
vise that will smash whatever is placed between its
jaws, an Athol Machine metalworking vise is at the
other end; with eight drawers in the base, the only
clue that it’s a dual purpose item is the decal on
the
door; in fine shape, instantly usable, the maker
used angle iron and pipe at the base to prevent the
legs from wearing; when’s the last time you saw
something so rugged while being so tender for the
newborn of the house; never, but
here, that’s where,
the
wood alone will cost more than the price of
this, the two vises are $300+; delivery within New
England and eastern NY can be arranged for a nominal
fee:

MI119 Unpicked patternamker’s tool
chest; a true time
capsule of what ca.WWI patternmaking in the UK
looked like, it’s loaded with planes, gouges, bits,
saws, and a great assortment of user-made mahogany
layout tools secured on the lid; the images show
what’s in the thing best, the purplish color on the
gouges is a protective coating, most of this stuff
in
fine shape showing little signs of use; will
instantly make you a woodworker, or just look like
one, the chest is 34” wide by 17” square:
